I wasn’t sure if I wanted to shout, laugh at the absurdity, or put my fist through the wall.

Here we were twenty-fucking-years later, and I finally had the reason why Mia walked out, and it was total bullshit.

“Cole,” she started but stopped when my hand came up.

I could take no more.

“You keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better about running. But my Mia, the woman I knew, the Determined Mia, the Independent Mia, the Strong Mia, she would’ve stayed and fought for what she wanted. She would’ve been brave enough to stay and fight for me. That was the woman I fell in love with. That was the woman I was prepared to give everything to. That was the woman I thought I had a future with. And she was absolutely the woman I would’ve made sure accomplished her every dream. But I didn’t get to do any of that because you fucking left me.”

“Well, you thought wrong, Cole. I was young and scared and didn’t have the first clue how to be the woman you needed because I didn’t even know how to be me. You had a career. You’d accomplished your dream. What did I have? Nothing.”

“You had me,” I reminded her.

The look that passed over Mia’s features could only be described as disgust but that quickly morphed into disappointment.

“I had you and that was supposed to be enough, right?”

Fuckin’ hell.

“That’s not what I meant, and you know it. I’m not some dick who thinks his woman should have nothing or her only reason for existence is to be at his beck and call.”

Mia silently stared at me and for once I couldn’t read her. She’d totally closed down and it pissed me off. I didn’t like her hiding from me. No, more like I didn’t like her taking herself away from me.

“I’m not that man,” I repeated, and wondered when the fuck this turned into me being the bad guy.

“No, Cole, you’re a man who has high expectations for yourself and those around you. It’s one of the many things I admire about you. It’s one of the reasons I fell in love with you. It’s also the reason why I left. I needed to go out into the world and prove I could accomplish anything I set my mind to. I needed to prove to myself I was as strong as you said I was. I am who I am because of you. It’s because you believed in me, I was able to fight for myself instead of staying and fighting for you.”

After she delivered her blows with the worst possible timing my doorbell rang.

Mia shifted and glanced over her shoulder.

“We’re not done.”

“We are, Cole. I wanted a chance to explain and to tell you thank you. I’ve done both. There’s nothing left to say.”

We were nowhere near done and whoever was at my door could either wait or go the fuck away.

“Why’d you come here?”

Her eyes locked with mine and she forced a sad smile to turn up her lips.
